This is the story of Enrico Berlinguer’s solitude and success during his years as General Secretary of the PCI—from 1972 until his death while addressing a rally in Padua on June 11, 1984—told through the eyes of a young Walter Veltroni. The narrative is complemented by previously unseen archival material, interviews with key political figures (both Italian and international, such as Napolitano and Gorbachev), and footage shot in the Sardinian locations that were dear to Berlinguer.
Quando c'era Berlinguer was directed by Walter Veltroni.
Quando c'era Berlinguer runs for 1h 57min, and was released in 2014.
