The worst fears of the westernized Afghan Nazany family come true when the Taliban march into Kabul. At the airport, inexperienced junior Italian attache Giovanni struggles to manage an influx of desperate refugees.
When the Taliban drive American evacuation helicopters away from the French embassy, Gilles opens the doors and Zahara and Baqir manage to get inside. Fazal, pursued by the Taliban, seeks help from a CIA operative.
Baqir charters five school buses, so the French embassy evacuation to the airport can finally begin. In the meantime, Vera and her colleagues locate Hassan in a Taliban camp, but they are caught trying to rescue him.
Gilles and the French bus convoy are stopped by the Taliban. Also, in the crazy rush of refugees trying to get past the American guards into the airport, Giovanni discovers a young boy who is looking for his parents.
Stuck inside the sealed airport, Giovanni can’t go look for Haroon’s parents. In the meantime, Vera and Hassan, still on foot and far from the airport, persuade mistrustful Afghan villagers to sell them a van.
In Doha and en route for Paris, Zahara learns about the attack at Kabul airport. Meanwhile, devastated Gilles abandons his Afghan proteges and evacuates with all the other French. It’s all over.
